I woke up early to watch the sunrise from the East-facing balcony.
Sara, who is still running on Eastern time, was fast asleep.
After a gourmet oatmeal breakfast….
… we dropped the car off at National Transmission and left car-less.
That was alright – Calgary’s C-Train would take us anywhere (not quite…) in the city!
Our destination was the University of Calgary. I stopped by the “Energy. Environment. Experiential Learning” (EEEL) Building to surprise my former graduate supervisor, Greg Welch, and the rest of the gang.
Here’s a picture with the new shiny EEEL building in the background:
Art, Seth and Abby gave me a tour of their new and state-of-the-art laboratory. I was very impressed and happy to see them with such a beautiful place to continue their grad studies.
It also nice to grab a coffee with Greg, take a walk around campus, and chat about both our recent moves.
Back at National Transmission, no good news was waiting for us. Our greatest fears were confirmed when the technician told us that repairing the transmission would cost over $3000. At this point, we realized our beautiful Nissan Altima, who I have called “Karla” for the past 6 weeks, would not be coming home with us.
Trying to make the most of our limited time with Karla, we drove over to Kensington Village for dinner at Julio’s Barrio for tacos and cold Pacifico cerveza. More importantly, we watched the Jays take Game 5 over the Texas Rangers.
After dinner, we took a walk along the Bow River trail. This shot of the sunset was taken from the Peace Bridge.
We have to give another big thank-you to James and Matt for letting us crash at their place. It really helps to have amazing friends in Calgary.
